Proper cleaning of sports bras can prolong their life. Plus, if you don't, wearing sweaty sports bras can be very uncomfortable, both mentally and physically. It also prevents staph infections in your chest. So how do you take care of your sports bra? Here are some tips.

1. Wash after each use

Get in the habit of taking off your sports bra right after your workout! Sweat and bacteria can damage the fabric of a sports bra and stretch the straps, so it's important to remove and rinse it off after exercising.

Throwing a sports bra back into the drawer can cause bacteria, fungus, and yeast to build up in the bra's fibers. The area under the breasts is particularly susceptible to yeast infections. If you don't wash your sports bra regularly, you can also develop rashes, acne, bacterial infections, or nipple abrasions.
So take off your sports bra right after a workout and either wash it right away or hang it to air dry until laundry day.

2. Hand wash or put in an underwear bag

Hand washing is the best way to prolong the life of your sports bra. It's also more environmentally friendly than machine wash.

Avoid regular detergents and opt for mild hand sanitizers and laundry soaps. When handwashing, regular detergent is difficult to rinse off clothes, and detergent residue can build up in the fibers of sports bras and cause odors.
Soak your sports bra in soapy water for about 20 to 30 minutes, then gently scrub the fabric with your hands. When done, drain and refill the sink with cold water until all the soap has been rinsed off.

If you wash your sports bra in the washing machine, follow these steps:

Fasten the buttons on the sports bra.

If your sports bra has removable padding, remove it and wash it by hand.
Put your sports bra in your underwear bag (or garment bag), especially if your machine washes it with other items.

Follow the care instructions on the label. If the label is missing, choose a fine cycle of warm or hot water.

Use regular detergent or detergent for high-performance fabrics. Avoid using too much detergent.

3. Regular disinfection

If your sports bra is sweating excessively, or you found it in an old gym bag, you may need to wash your sports bra in the sanitizing cycle of the wash. If your machine doesn't have a sanitizing cycle, you can sanitize it by washing it in extra hot water.

4. Lay flat to dry

Avoid using the dryer, especially on high heat. Dryers can stretch the fabric and elasticity of sports bras, reducing their support and even changing the fit. Luckily, the sports bra is designed to dry quickly.

Lay them out on a towel and air dry on the counter or flat surface. Alternatively, hang them on a drying rack.

Try to avoid hanging your sports bra over the straps, as this will cause the straps to stretch.

5. Replacing a worn sports bra

Even with proper care, your sports bra can wear down over time, resulting in less support for you when you hit the gym. Watch for signs that your old sports bra needs to be replaced, such as:

The shoulder straps are stretched and do not provide enough support.

The straps slide or the bra goes up as you lift your arms.

There is pilling in some areas or the fabric looks worn.

The bra is stained or smells bad after washing.

With proper care of your sports bras, you can expect them to last for about a year. When it's time to buy a new one, make sure it fits and choose materials that will keep you cool and dry. If you want to know more about sports bras, please contact us.
